Ice climbers nana waifu2/27/2023 ![]() ![]() While there are other characters he could've used to represent this gimmick, such as a tag-team of Diddy and Dixie, I imagine the Ice Climbers were a bit easier to pull off due to their relatively simplistic character designs and the fact they were basically mirror images of one another greatly reducing the work involved and probably making it easier on the hardware as well. Sakurai likely chose the Ice Climbers because they allowed for a unique gimmick, said gimmick being controlling two characters at once. It's interesting to wonder what other classic NES elements would've been included had they had a stage in Smash 4, I imagine some of the Balloon Fight music from the 3DS stage would've been used and maybe some of the other NES songs that got thrown into other stages such as the Duck Hunt stage. While they've sort of evolved past that, as we've seen more retro NES characters alongside them such as Pit and Duck Hunt, the element is still present since Icicle Mountain uses Balloon Fight as an alternate music track and the fish from said game appears on The Summit in Brawl. It's also worth noting that Sakurai included them not only as representatives of their own series, but classic NES as a whole they were chosen over Balloon Fighter, Bubbles from Clu Clu Land, the Excitebiker, and that dude from Urban Champion. ![]() so one could say it has some importance in Nintendo's history. That being said, Ice Climbers isn't a totally forgettable game-in fact its programmer, Kazuaki Morita, credits it with helping him warm-up before going on to work on Super Mario Bros. That being said, watching the E3 footage it seems SOMEONE must've known them as when they're revealed you can hear people excitedly going "ICE CLIMBERS!?", but I've never run into a person in my entire life who had a hard-on for the Ice Climbers outside of their Smash Bros. characters that one could say fall under the "retro category", as well as the "literally who?" category-while Ness and Captain Falcon aren't exactly household names, they were from from series with multiple entries at the time and enjoyed cult popularity while the Ice Climbers starred in a single game released way back at the beginning of the NES' lifecycle that didn't seem to be regarded all that highly.
